Question
I feel totally exhausted – my baby never sleeps and I feel so alone. Everyone else’s baby seems to sleep through the night. Is it all my fault? I feel like I am such a rubbish mum.
Answer
It can be really hard when you feel you are the only one going through this, and it makes it even more difficult to cope when you are sleep deprived. But we hear from many parents who struggle with getting their baby to sleep, so you are not alone.
You obviously want the best for your baby and that means more than anything. Being a parent isn’t easy. At one time or another every parent will feel like they are failing. There is no instruction manual to being a parent, we learn on the job!
You have not mentioned how old your baby is - perhaps you still see your health visitor? Is this something you could talk to her about or even your GP? They may be able to give you some sleep techniques to try out with your baby. Your local area may also have a sleep support group where you can talk to other parents in the same situation.
Is there any chance you can ask someone to help your baby for a few hours, a friend, relative? Perhaps you could use this time to catch up on some sleep yourself? For further help ring our free Parentline 0808 800 2222, it is confidential and open 24 hours, every day of the week.
